In this role you will perform specific medical physics research tasks as defined by the principal investigator. The goal of the project is to develop novel treatment planning tools for targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT, both beta-particle and photon emitters) comparable to those used in radiation oncology practice (e.g., for external beam and brachytherapy), in order to aid in trial design and tumor response and toxicity prediction. The specific aims involve investigating the usefulness of deterministic radiation transport methods (DOMs) coupled with quantitative SPECT/CT or PET/CT for internal radionuclide dosimetry and treatment planning. The efficiency of DOM solution convergence is attributed to novel methods for solving radiation transport equations discretized in space (finite-element mesh), angle (discrete ordinates) and energy (multi-group cross sections). Recently, DOM has been introduced for external beam and brachytherapy dose calculations and shown to be as accurate as Monte Carlo methods.<br/><br/>Christiana Care Health System has six medical physicists and eight dosimetrists working at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center. The practice has six Siemens linear accelerators (3 Primus, 2 Oncor, 1 Artiste) equipped with CBCT, and one CyberKnife system. Siemens 4D CT is available at the Helen F Graham Cancer Center. Pinnacle, MultiPlan, RayStation, Variseed, and Oncentra are used for treatment planning for all sites and integrated with Mosaiq R&V. Elekta Clarity 3D Ultrasound system is also integrated for IGRT for the breast.
