In 2010, Christiana Care Heath System achieved Magnet® Designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Only six percent of the nation’s hospitals have achieved this honor, the highest national recognition for nursing excellence a health care organization can achieve.

At Christiana Care, our nursing professional practice model includes our clinical ladder, our formal mentorship program, our peer review program and our care delivery model, all based within the framework of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses’ Synergy Model. Our practice model is built on the core philosophy of shared governance. We believe empowered, engaged nurses drive nursing excellence.

That is why we developed Career Advancement of RN Excellence through Synergy (CARES), Christiana Care’s Clinical Ladder program. Designed to recognize and reward excellence in clinical nursing practice, the CARES program is specifically focused on professional nurses who prefer to pursue their career development in direct patient care. This program promotes:

  • The growth of our nurses.
  • Encourages nurses to take the initiative for professional development in their clinical field.
  • Recognizes those who show leadership within their unit, department and institution, as well as on regional and/or national levels.
  • Enhances the quality of care — often resulting in improved patient outcomes and an enhanced work environment for nurses.

Successful achievement of Clinical Ladder advancement results in not only recognition and financial return, but also increased competency and a proven commitment to Christiana Care’s nursing department. RNs who participate in our CARES program are recognized with a promotion from Registered Nurse I, to RN II and voluntarily on to RN III or IV. These nurses receive an increase in their base salary, as well as in overall earning potential.

The CARES program, designed by representatives from all levels of the professional nursing staff, focuses on the clinical practice of nurses and seeks to designate nurses according to their competence and achievement. Our Clinical Ladder provides opportunities to plan and develop one’s career by demonstrating initiative, creativity, competency and the ability to successfully navigate all facets of clinical nursing practice.
