ChristianaCare, Helen F. Graham Cancer Center is looking for an Access Coordinator to work in the Lung Health Program.

The Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute's Thoracic, Esophageal and Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary Center specializes in treating cancers of the lung, trachea, chest wall, mediastinum (sternum and surrounding area), and Esophagus

Primary Function

This position is directly responsible for the coordination of care between the practice, referring provider, hospital support providers, both specialty and primary and the patient.  Access Coordinators take the responsibility to obtain and track all needed referrals and information to schedule the patient resulting in a timely, positive, and effective patient encounter ensuring a positive patient experience.  

Work Schedule:

  • Monday- Friday 8am-4:30pm
  • No weekend commitments and no holidays


  • Work effectively and efficiently with referring physician offices and Radiology to coordinate patient care
  • Investigate and document all information to support Shared Decision-Making, Radiology, and support services 
  • Investigate and document all information to support outpatient office visit services.  Review patient diagnosis and coordinate directly with the practice provider to support patients with a critical diagnosis that may warrant immediate intervention.
  • Coordinating multidisciplinary clinic appointments according to the plan of care with Physicians, Nurse Navigators, and other care team members.
  • Transcribe the patient portal message, forward to the Triage Team and follow up/respond back to the patient.
  • Insurance verification (level of coverage to support services and out of pocket expenses)
  • Minimize financial risk and maximize delivery of patient care by reviewing pts with no or less than adequate insurance coverage and alert the practice director/ Lung Health Nurse Navigators.  Once that connection is initiated, track the interaction until coverage have been confirmed to support the pt being seen and treated
  • Provide new patients with all information needed prior to the scheduled appointment date.  Including the access to Patient Portal
  • Request referral, track and monitor process ensuring a timely response to the request and follow up interaction with the Patient and their Referring Physician
  • Coordinating multidisciplinary clinic appointments according to the plan of care with Physicians, Nurse Navigators, and other care team members
  • Transcribe the patient portal message, forward to the Triage Team and follow up/respond back to the patient
  • Enter and/or update all “available” information into Soarian and Cerner
  • Schedule tests/procedures for patients and obtain necessary prior authorizations
  • Performs daily operational duties such as scheduling, registration, pre-registration, verification, and authorization for treatments utilizing the Cerner Ambulatory, Rev Cycle, HealtheCare and Soarian systems


  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Knowledge of 3rd party billing practices
  • Ability to coordinate work schedule to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency
  • Prioritize work assignments and multitask.
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Ability to establish and maintain superior quality customer service with patients, patient families, staff, visitors, insurance companies, physicians, physician office staff, and the general public

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • 2 years' experience in a medical office practice setting is required; 3 years' experience is preferred
  • Medical receptionist or medical assistant degree preferred, but not required.
