PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To provide genetic counseling to persons or families with a history of certain cancers or known cancer risk factors, to develop a Familial Cancer Risk Assessment Program, to develop and coordinate a Genetic Risk Assessment Center,  and to represent Christiana Care Health System in State and regional activities of importance to cancer genetic services.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works with the appropriate physician in supporting consultation requests from persons or families with a history of certain cancers or known cancer risk factors or from other cancer health care professionals. Obtains and interprets information from multiple sources to identify counseling needs and provide the care needed.

Demonstrates skills and knowledge to provide genetic counseling for Adult clients. Communicates follow-up and action plan with referring physician or health professional and client.

Develops and coordinates Familial Cancer Risk Assessment Program and Genetic Risk Assessment Center.

Develops and coordinates educational programs for professional cancer health care personnel within   CCHS.

Initiates, writes and administers educational and research grants in both principal and collaborative investigations.

Educates professionals informally in daily clinical situations or multi-disciplinary team conferences.

Maintains required credentials; completes mandatory inservice programs as scheduled; assumes responsibility for ongoing professional growth; exhibits a high level of professionalism; acts as role model for staff and others in the organization.

Maintains current knowledge of genetic counseling issues in Cancer.

Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices;  reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.

Performs other related duties as required.  Initiating, writing and administering educational and research grants as both Principal investigator and collaborator.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Masters degree in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling.  Certified Genetic Counselor or Board eligible, or certified Genetic Nurse Practitioner, or physician.  Certification and ongoing certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling required for continued employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree for an accredited Genetic Counseling program.  American Board of Genetic Counseling eligible or certified.  Delaware License for Genetic Counseling (provisional or full)
