To maintain/improve the nutritional status of patients by assessing nutritional risk, evaluating nutritional requirements, developing care plans, providing nutrition education, and evaluating patient nutritional outcomes.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Identifies and prioritizes patients requiring nutrition intervention and education based upon nutrition screening protocols.
Demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to interpret clinical data obtained from medical records. Evaluates patients' nutritional status correctly and assigns appropriate risk levels. Develops nutritional goals and provides appropriate care to age specific populations and patients at nutritional risk.
If ASPEN certified, develops nutritional care plans for patients on parenteral nutrition. Otherwise, confers with a senior registered dietitian to develop appropriate nutritional assessments and recommendations for patients on parenteral nutrition.
Documents appropriately in the medical record and as identified, classifies the type of malnutrition.
Provides diet education to patients and assists in the development and evaluation of patient education materials.
As part of a team approach, confers with the physician and medical staff concerning diet prescriptions, clinical recommendations, and the implementation of care plans.
Follows "Registered Dietitian Range of Responsibilities" policy and procedures.
Participates in the formulation, implementation, and compliance with all policies, procedures, and standards related to the nutritional management of patients.
Completes productivity reports and special assignments in a timely and accurate manner.
Consults and makes recommendations to outpatient nutrition programs and agencies responsible for home or institutional care of patients following discharge.
Plans and presents nutrition inservices for departmental and medical staff.
Actively represents Nutrition Services on committees as assigned.
Provides orientation, training, and ongoing supervision of nutrition and patient service staff.
Provides recognition to peers, dietetic technicians and PST staff for excellent service when observed.
Works with senior registered dietitians to supervise and support student interns.
Participates in performance improvement activities as assigned.
Demonstrates compliance with CCHS center and departmental policies and procedures and mandatory education requirements including but not limited to safety, infection control, attendance, and dress code.
Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
SCOPE, PURPOSE AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:
Frequent contact with patients, families, nurses, physicians, departmental staff and other health team members in providing nutrition intervention, support, and education.
DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:
Dietetic Technicians, Diet Clerks, Service Assistant III, Tray Attendants, Dietetic Interns.
Corporate Director and Clinical Nutrition Manager, Food and Nutrition Services; Senior Dietitians.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelors Degree in Food and Nutrition required. Master's Degree in Food and Nutrition preferred.
Experience as a clinical dietitian in an acute care facility preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of the principles of food and nutrition.
Knowledge of nutrition assessment standards and principles.
Knowledge of enteral and parenteral feeding practices and applications.
Knowledge of disease entities and their influence upon nutritional status of patients.
Knowledge of supplemental nutritional products.
Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
Ability to counsel and teach patients and other health professionals.
Ability to supervise and delegate work and responsibilities to subordinates.
Knowledge of leadership skills including: problem solving, delegation, decision making, training, and promotion of employee morale.
Ability to perform nutrition assessments and document care plans for all age-specific groups.
Ability to analyze and evaluate section progress and recommend and implement changes.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Registration status as a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. ASPEN Certification as a Nutrition Support Dietitian within three years of hire (one time). Licensure with the State of Maryland is required at time of hire.
