As the Laboratory Operations Director, you will direct the general operations of assigned CAP-accredited laboratories and manage department compliance programs required by the standards of all applicable regulatory and accrediting agencies.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements a Total Laboratory Performance Improvement Program in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization
  • Serves as Project Manager for lab-related renovations/projects, equipment removal and placement
  • Oversees the environmental conditions of the laboratories to ensure that conditions are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees are protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards
  • Provides day to day technical direction and oversight for comprehensive laboratory services
  • Ensures inpatient blood collection services on the Cecil Campus to satisfy patient care needs
  • Directs laboratory informatics personnel and programming in a manner that builds a highly reliable service that emphasizes quality and safety
  • Directs compliance activities for the laboratory maintaining conformity to the accreditation standards of CAP and JC and with the regulations of CLIA'88, OSHA, Right To Know Legislation, and HIPAA
  • Establishes charges for laboratory services, in concert with the Finance Department and Senior Vice President, after analysis of the cost and reimbursement landscape
  • Responsible for operational and capital budget forecasts and performance against budget for assigned cost center(s)
  • Participates in the vendor contracting, as required
  • Develops and maintains departmental policies and procedures
  • Facilitates CAP self inspections, on-site surveys, and Christiana Care-performed inspections of other laboratories
  • Develops and implements the Pathology Performance Improvement Program for both intra- and inter-departmental performance improvement activities. Leads, facilitates, and advises departmental performance improvement teams. Works closely with the System-wide performance improvement department collaborating with other inter-departmental teams.
  • Directs quality assurance activities throughout the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services. Ensures that all Quality Assurance activities within the department conform to CAP and CLIA'88 requirements; working with each section manager to ensure sectional QA plans are complete within established guidelines.
  • Supervises assigned staff and provides assistance to others in supervising their staff. Ensures that productivity measures accurately reflect the departmental workload. Ensures adequate and appropriate staffing. Ensures that sections receive appropriate in-service and orientation training.
  • Develops and maintains Departmental program of continuing education.
  • Coordinates departmental involvement in research projects acting as the contact person for the Office of Sponsored Programs and the Value Institute including coordination of processing and other critical issues associated with laboratory participation in the project.

Education and experience requirements:

  • BS Medical Technology or Medical Lab Science required
  • MBA or MHA required
  • ASCP certification required
  • At least three years of management or supervisory experience
  • At least three years of bench experience in a laboratory setting
