Responsible for assisting with diagnostic tests using electrocardiograms (EKGs) to capture patient heart rhythm and rate. (EKGs are performed before/after operations, during physicals, examinations of patients with a history of heart disease, when patients are experiencing chest pains, and other times deemed necessary by physicians.). This is a rotating shift position, day, evening, midnights.  Every other weekend and holiday. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • Perform EKG tracings for Newark, Union, and Wilmington Hospitals.
  • Transfer EKG into computer.
  • Make a charge for a patient as needed.
  • Prepares EKG tracing for dictator/editing.
  • Must be able to interpret/identify cardiac rhythms and dysrhythmias.
  • Performs pacemaker interrogations as requested in the Emergency Depts. (Christiana/Wilmington)
  • Cleans and stocks EKG machine for critical care units.
  • Answer telephone takes messages and route calls.
  • Assist clerical staff and performs other related duties as required.
  • Assist with all stress testing (Cecil Campus)
  • Prepares, applies and discontinues Holter monitors (Cecil Campus)
  • Scans Holter monitor recordings for interpretation by Cardiologist. (Cecil Campus)
  • Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development, the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify patient needs, and to provide the care needed.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to establish departmental safety rules and practices.  Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:

  • Frequent contact with physicians, patients, nursing staff, various labs, clerical, visitors and families in performing electrocardiographic test, collecting billing information and coordinating daily work load.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School graduate or its equivalent.
  • Basic CCU inservice and medical terminology.  EKG experience preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of EKG machine program format.
  • Knowledge of office equipment and machines.
  • Ability to learn departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to be efficient and accurate.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve information on computer terminal.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, tact and diplomacy.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to assist with basic EKG training for other departments.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Yearly EKG competency & critical result review (Cecil Campus),
  • BEAT class training upon hire/transfer into the department with certificate of completion.
  • CPR W/AED certification card upon completion (every two years).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Bending, stooping, standing, walking, and reaching while performing tests.

  • Generally pleasant office environment but can be stressful at times.
