PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To lead a group of individuals through a pre-arranged format of exercises designed to enhance overall fitness, strength, and endurance, while ensuring the safety of the individuals. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Knowledge of basic physiology, anatomy, and body mechanics
  • Choregraph and lead exercise classes
  • Manage exercise class size up to 20 participants with varying abilities
  • Design and teach a variety of exercise routines
  • Monitor and teach class participants proper exercise form and technique using positive reinforcement
  • Educate class participants about fitness, exercise, and safe exercise techniques
  • Set up, move, and store exercise equipment
  • Leave a clean and organized exercise room after class
  • Perform assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices
  • Perform exercise equipment maintenance
  • Report to the fitness center manager or supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself and other caregivers
  • Perform other related duties as required
  • Complete system-wide education and other requirements including but not limited to vaccination deadlines and surveys
  • Meet with caregivers for orientations, consultations, and exercise instruction
  • Prescribe exercise prescriptions and fitness assessments
  • Participate in other departments and system-wide events, tabling events, exercise demonstrations
  • Opportunities to supervise and oversee daily operations of the fitness centers

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:

  • Instruct a minimum of 24 exercise classes/year, as scheduled by Fitness Center Manager

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

  • None

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

  • Manager, Fitness Centers
  • Manager, Benefits and Wellness

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma
  • Certification in group fitness instruction or the equivalent from a nationally recognized institution including, but not limited to: ACE, ACSM, IDEA, AFAA
  • CPR with AED certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of basic technology including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Teams
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot audio equipment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing

Special Requirements:

  • Certification in CPR/AED
  • Have experience instructing group fitness classes to diverse abilities
  • Present and demonstrate to other departments within the health system

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Physical demands include but are not limited to the ability to lift light weights, bending, squatting, jumping, and running, reaching, walking, hopping, spinning, and kicking.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a person with disabilities to perform the principal duties and responsibilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Fitness centers and exercise studios at the Avenue North, Christiana, and Wilmington campuses, departments system-wide either in person, Teams or Zoom.
