Christiana Care Health System is recruiting for a Laboratory Receiving Clerk to work full time evening shift. The schedule for this position is 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Every other weekend required. Weekend hours are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. 2 to 3 holidays per year required.


In this position, you will perform pre and post analytical functions that support the testing of specimens received in the General Laboratory.
 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Processes and sorts laboratory specimens and request slips. Prints and properly affixes identification labels to all incoming patient specimens. Prioritizes incoming work, ensuring samples for stat testing are delivered to the appropriate laboratory section in order to maintain stated turnaround times.
  • Follows established protocols for receiving Christiana Care phlebotomy collected specimens, including reconciliation of tracking slips from other Christiana Care laboratories and outreach sites.
  • Follows established protocol for verification of Power Chart requisition/specimen match for Emergency Department and in-house nurse collected samples. Utilizes patient demographic information such as name, date of birth, medical record number, financial number, physician and encounter to ensure accurate identification.
  • Registers outpatient drop-off samples accurately in Soarian. Selects the correct encounter and orders laboratory tests accurately in the LIS. Accurately completes agency registrations for drop-off samples.
  • Handles all telephone requests in a courteous manner. When appropriate, calls provider/nursing unit to clarify any confusion or question regarding requisitions or samples received. Seeks technical guidance from supervisor or laboratory MLS staff when needed.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduate
  • Two years applicable clinical experience or equivalent college courses in the health care field
  • Knowledge of clerical methods and techniques
  • Knowledge of office equipment and machines

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks to support testing of specimens

  • Ability to utilize information to accurately identify patient and match specimen with request
