ChristianaCare is recruiting a full time Bone Marrow Transplant/Blood Bank Laboratory Technical Specialist. In this position, you will coordinate the collection, and manage the shipment, receipt and storage of cellular therapy products for the BMT program.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and maintain standard operating procedures for BMT laboratory functions. Assure that written procedures accurately describe and effectively document all key elements of each critical step in the handling/processing of cellular therapy products collected and/or infused.
  • Prepare collection label for cellular therapy products prior to collection. Following collection, take custody of and coordinate transport of product for processing by a third party. Receive cellular therapy product(s) from third party and store appropriately prior to infusion. Prepare cellular therapy product immediately prior to bedside infusion. Complete all required documentation according to standard operating procedures.
  • Assist in the OR during marrow harvests. Coordinate shipment of marrow to the third party laboratory for processing.
  • Maintain existing frozen cellular therapy product inventory (on-site) in accordance with regulatory and facility processes and requirements. This includes management and use of liquid nitrogen tanks and cryo freezers in accordance with safety standards and precautions.
  • Develop and implement quality assurance programs to monitor the effectiveness of all systems to ensure compliance with established procedures. Evaluate results and initiate change; to include appropriate documentation. Prepare quality reports of BMT lab activities at defined intervals.
  • Coordinate orientation and/or cross-training of Blood Bank medical laboratory scientists to Bone Marrow laboratory tasks
  • Competent to perform all job functions of a Medical Laboratory Scientist I (MLS-I) in the Blood Bank laboratory. Routinely work bench assignments and participate in weekend, holiday and contingency coverage as assigned.
  • Prepare for and participates in all regulatory inspections. Provide requested materials and describe operations appropriately. Assist in the implementation of corrective actions, when necessary.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors of Science in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science; or equivalent BS degree which requires completion of clinical rotations through an approved education program
  • At least five years of experience working in the Blood Bank
  • Previous cellular therapy laboratory experience preferred
  • Cellular Therapies Certificate required; or agreement to successful completion of AABB's Cellular Therapies Certificate Program within two years of hire
  • Certified or eligible for MT(ASCP)
