Full-time Breast-Feeding Peer Counselor

We are seeking a qualified candidate who is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other lactating parents enjoy a positive experience. Searching for candidates that are passionate, professional, engaging about supporting mothers / people on their breastfeeding journey. Candidate must have knowledge of community-based resources, skill in interpersonal relations, oral and written communication, and be self-motivated.
This is a day shift position with some weekend requirements. Travel between the hospital, ChristianaCare offices and community events may be required.

Requirements: Must possess a High School diploma or equivalent.  Is currently fully breastfeeding and/or has fully breastfed at least one baby for at least six months, Is participating in, has participated in and/or is familiar with WIC programs.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor.
  • Receives a caseload of WIC eligible birth and lactating parents and makes routine periodic contacts with all those assigned.
  • Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new parents, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding.
  • Helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
  • Counsels WIC eligible pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, text messaging, and/or hospital visits at routine intervals
  • Is available outside the usual 8 to 5 working schedule to new lactating parents who are having breastfeeding problems.
  • Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with patients.
  • Refers parents, according to established protocols, to WIC, a lactation consultant, the physician or nurse. Or other appropriate services per ChristianaCare's policies.
  • Attends and assists with prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups.
  • Attends WIC staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops per the WIC contract
  • Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that may be provided by the supervisor.
  • May assist WIC and ChristianaCare staff in promoting breastfeeding support and peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.
  • Provides timely reports including data and patient activity information as the department requires.
  • Works to create linkages with WIC, ChristianCare programs and other community resources for pregnant and new parents.
