ChristianaCare Pharmacy Department is recruiting for Certified Pharmacy Technicians.  Positions are available at the Christiana and Wilmington campuses.  Every other weekend and holidays as required. 

As a Pharmacy Technician, you will perform assigned duties in support of the Department of Pharmacy Services with an emphasis on accuracy, timeliness, and patient safety.


Pharmacy Operations:

  • Assist the pharmacist in providing timely, efficient, cost effective, and appropriate pharmaceutical care to the patient
  • Refill patient medication bins through robot cart fill and manual picks; update carts by including new orders, removing discontinued medications, and transferring medications.  Update labeling of patient medication bins on admission, transfer, and discharge of patients
  • Deliver and exchange 24-hour cart fill to nursing units at scheduled times. Check medication storage areas for discontinued and discharged patient medications; ensure that returned medications are placed back into stock
  • Reorder medications in short supply and restock the picking station and other areas of the pharmacy
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area, check periodically for overstocked and outdated medications
  • Answer telephone and greet personnel coming to pharmacy in a courteous and friendly manner. Refer problem and drug information inquiries to the pharmacist
  • Make rounds of nursing units for medication drop-off and pick up discontinued medications.
  • Send prepared medications to nursing units via pneumatic tube system on a timely basis for STATs and missing doses if the medication can be tubed. Any medication that cannot be tubed is to be delivered to the appropriate location on the nursing unit
  • Manage AcuDose inventory, including accurate selection and loading of medications 
  • Ensure that medications are stored properly and that only in date medications are stored.  Remove discontinued medication

Supply Chain and Automation:

  • Fill floor stock orders and deliver to nursing units and restock floor stock area
  • Receive and check incoming supplier order(s) 
  • Perform floor stock billing to ensure patients are billed accurately and timely 
  • Perform repackaging/prepackaging to maintain PAR levels
  • Inspect medications at nursing units, including refrigerators and AcuDose machines
  • Process and fill office practice orders and package for delivery
  • Update expiration dates and inventory levels of stock medication
  • Safely and effectively use automated devices including KitCheck, MEDCarousels, AcuDoses, computers, scanners, printers, copiers, fax machines and other technology as required
  • Use appropriate PPE for handling chemotherapy medications and other hazardous agents

Intravenous Admixture Services (IVAS), Operating Room (OR), and Helen F. Graham Cancer Center (HFGCC):

  • Prepare IV medications using aseptic techniques and in following processes in full compliance with USP 795, 797, and 800 federal regulations
  • Complete IV batch fills in a timely manner to ensure efficient and cost-effective care for our patients
  • Assist batching activities in order to provide sufficient quantities of IV products to sustain daily activities of the health system
  • Act to maintain consistency of the environment within the cleanroom area.  This is supported by properly completing all cleaning tasks as assigned and providing appropriate documentation of all cleaning activities
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area at all times, verifying that product within the area is within date and stored under appropriate conditions
  • Order, receive, and restock IV supplies to meet daily demands of the IV lab area
  • Following appropriate procedures for gowning and garbing.  Maintain proper personal hygiene for work in the cleanroom environment as outlined in departmental policy
  • Use appropriate PPE and closed system transfer devices (as needed) for the preparation of chemotherapy and other hazardous medications
  • Successfully complete all competencies and maintain aseptic technique and IV skillsets as required by departmental policy in accordance with state and federal regulation

Other Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Orient and train new pharmacy personnel
  • Recommend ideas to supervisor for improvement of methods and procedures
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned for emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform to maintain appropriate level of pharmacy service
  • Maintain a current knowledge of all departmental policies and procedures
  • Complete mandatory education and assigned competencies
  • Perform assigned work safely adhering to established departmental rules and practices.  Report to supervisor in a timely manner any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other caregivers, patients, or visitors


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred; other pharmacy experience will be evaluated for hospital equivalency
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification as a certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) required unless enrolled in PharmD program
  • Computer experience preferred (e.g. window-based programs)
  • Basic typing skills
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand provider medication orders
  • Knowledge of generic and trade names of formulary drugs
  • Ability to do basic arithmetic calculations


Standing and walking up to 8 miles a day with intermittent sitting.  Occasional extended periods at computer terminal. Required movement throughout ChristianaCare.  Requires manual dexterity, the ability to push or pull a fully weighted cart of 250 lbs. which is no more than 15 lbs. and lift up to 50 lbs. are essential components of the position.
