Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist, performs assigned duties in support of the Department of Pharmacy Services with an emphasis on accuracy, timeliness, and patient safety within the scheduled Outpatient Pharmacy location.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pharmacy Outpatient Operations

  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area.  Ability to enter patient information and prescription orders in the pharmacy computer system, paying particular attention to drug, dose, route, frequency, refills, date, quantity, third party and other required information
  • Completes task in the prescription dispensing workflow (e.g. data entry, product dispensing, etc.) under the direct supervision of pharmacist.  Understands limitations of scope of practice and demonstrates ability to escalate clinical concerns to the pharmacist-on-duty
  • Possess and maintain skills to execute outpatient pharmacy clinical and operational initiatives (e.g. Medication Therapy Management (MTM), population health, disease management, patient education, medication discharge planning, medication reconciliation, Prescription Discharge Program, Specialty Medication Patient Management Program, Meds to Beds)
  • Proficient at following defined policies and procedures to assist the pharmacist-on-duty in delivery of care
  • Responsible for ensuring a favorable patient experience and acts as the primary contact for issues in the retail / mail order pharmacy operations.  Provides exceptional customer service to all internal and external customers.  Solves patient / customer service-related problems
  • Demonstrates ability to navigate the prescription insurance coverage plans to successfully adjudicate prescription claims
  • Understands concepts of inventory management and proper storage of pharmaceuticals to prevent waste of medications and promote safety for our caregivers
  • Demonstrate flexibility and cooperation to manage work related tasks and actively participate as a member of the team to effectively collaborate on achieving departmental and system-wide goals
  • Takes accountability in their workflow roles and responsibilities by focusing on efficiency within their data entry times as well as quality by maintaining low error rates

Other Pharmacy Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complete mandatory education and assigned competencies
  • Maintain a current knowledge of all departmental policies and procedures
  • Recommend ideas to supervisor for improvement of methods and procedures to promote efficiency and effectiveness
  • Orient and train new pharmacy personnel
  • Provides coverage for absences in other areas of the pharmacy as needed and appropriate.  Floats from areas of low workload to areas of heavy work as needed to provide optimal patient care
  • Perform assigned work safely adhering to established departmental rules and practices.  Report to supervisor in a timely manner any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other caregivers, patients, or visitors
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned for emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform to maintain appropriate level of pharmacy service

  • Constant contact with pharmacists and other pharmacy technicians
  • Frequent contact with providers, nurses, and other hospital professionals

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous Outpatient pharmacy experience preferred, but other pharmacy experience will be evaluated
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification required.
  • State Registration where applicable (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania Locations)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of current outpatient pharmacy principles and practices
  • Knowledge of generic and trade names of formulary drugs
  • Knowledge of third-party prescription insurance billing and claim adjudication
  • Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and standards
  • Knowledge of federal (DEA, FDA, CMS, etc.) and state laws governing pharmacy practices
  • Knowledge of independent accrediting organization (e.g. Joint Commission, URAC, etc.) requirements and standards
  • Ability to maintain ChristianaCare confidentiality standards
  • Ability to work independently within established policies and procedures
  • Ability to work as part of the team with a collaborative mindset
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate program operations
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and evaluate problems and recommend solutions
  • Ability to exercise judgement, tact, and diplomacy
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite Applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to grasp new concepts quickly, navigate technology, and adapt to change
  • Excellent customer service and proficient at service recovery
  • Must be dependable by maintaining a good attendance record
  • Must have excellent work habits

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Standing and walking with intermittent sitting. Requires movement throughout the ChristianaCare Campuses. Some pushing, pulling, or lifting (up to 50lbs.) and manual dexterity.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Pleasant, fast-paced working environment where you will be frequently interacting with customers and patients.  Possible exposure to infections, communicable diseases, and open wounds. Occasional exposure to chemicals, solvents, chemotherapeutic agents, needles, broken glass, and electronic equipment.
