ChristianaCare is looking for a full-time Power Plant Mechanic II in Elkton Maryland to accurately monitor and operate the facilities plant equipment at peak efficiency and provide necessary utilities and services throughout the building at all times. Maintain and repair steam plant/chiller plant, auxiliary systems, including chilled and condenser water pumps, cooling towers, chemical feed, plant air, fuel oil and feedwater systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lays out repair work and utilizes blueprints and manufacturer's information. Determines materials for all system work under Power Plant cognizance or recommends contractor repair.
  • Installs and repairs selected piping systems which includes cutting, bending, threading, and soldering of pipes repaired.
  • Maintains all types of heat exchangers, hot water generators, feedwater pumps, fuel oil heaters and pumps, condensate return pump stations, pressure regulating valves and associated components.
  • Maintains chilled water plant including chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and associated components.
  • Monitor, repair, and preventative maintenance of HVAC systems, heating systems, ventilation/exhaust systems, and refrigeration systems as required.
  • Adjust, repair VAV and CV air terminal units (thermostat, humidistats, reheat valves, controls, etc.) to maintain compliance with regulatory standards and acceptable environmental conditions for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Assists and instructs with more complex maintenance and operator tasks. Maintains good communications with operators and plant upkeep matters.

Hours: 6:00pm - 6:00am (12-hour shifts) Rotating weekends

Education and Experience Requirements:

High school graduate or equivalent.

Completion of four -year apprenticeship program preferred.

Four years practical experience in a power plant or similar operation.

Basic computer skills with Microsoft operating systems

Special requirements:

Maryland 1st Grade Stationary Engineering License required. A lower grade License is acceptable for new hires, with the expectation that advancement to a 1st grade license is required at the time frames consistent with DLLR regulations. EPA 608 CFC Certification is preferred.

Physical demands:

Strenuous work associated with direct power plant systems repair, including operating chain falls and large wrenches, climbing cooling towers, boiler tops, ladder work, and bending and stooping over equipment; also lifting equipment into place

Working conditions:

Environmentally uncontrolled - extremely hot (above boilers), cold (cooling towers and tank farm in the cooler months) and hazardous at times. Work areas can be wet, dirty, and/or dusty. Working with high pressures and hot fluids and hot surfaces poses the usual hazards. May be lack of sleep at times due to overnight and weekend emergency work. Some work is done with potentially hazardous chemicals.
