PRIMARY FUNCTION: To design, manage and execute system-wide event management processes including coordination, facilitation and integration of event/peer review information to achieve continuous improvements in patient care delivery and optimal patient outcomes. Acts as an expert resource for event management with the objectives of enhancing patient safety, reducing patient harm and achieving Christiana Care's strategic and patient safety goals.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develops implements and evaluates processes and procedures to support event management, including Medical-Dental Staff peer review and workplace concerns

Collaborates with Risk Management, Patient Relations and other clinical departments to facilitate review of events

Identifies, screens and triages cases review based on urgency, level of harm, complexity, and criteria or red flags

Monitors progress in achieving event management and peer review outcomes and system improvements.

Disseminates and incorporates best practice; acts as a liaison to other clinical departments.

Identifies potential quality issues based on referrals and appropriately refers for event/peer review process

Disseminates case information to appropriate Event/Peer Review Specialist and other staff as needed.

Manages event management-based committees, workgroups, huddles, debriefs and other groups as assigned.

Utilizes clinical expertise and culture of responsibility concepts to guide event management and provide information relative to specific cases and events.

Implements strategies based on current and best practice of care including safe, effective and efficient care.

Networks with other organizations for best practice and initiates change resultant in decrease in patient harm.

Maintains a collaborative professional working relationship with clinicians and administrative staff necessary to develop, implement and evaluate event management processes.

Facilitates Case/Peer review process through timely closure and refers system issues to appropriate leadership or committee.

Mentors Event/Peer Review staff in event management process(es) as needed.

Collaborates with Medical Leadership to develop and maintain a departmental list of reviewable events.

Collaborate with Clinical Chairs in performing focused and ongoing professional practice evaluation as needed.

Leads the initiation of the potential sentinel event process to facilitate obtaining timely facts as known.

Performs quality checks for the integrity of event/peer review database entry/closure of cases.

Presents progress reports/findings on a regular basis to appropriate constituencies within the system.

Enhances the understandings of project/program through interactions with physicians, administrative staff, staff and other members of the healthcare team.

Actively participates in system-wide management activities, attends meetings and in and in-service/educational programs, and other activities as requested.

Maintains required credentials; assume responsibilities for ongoing professional growth; exhibit a high level of professionalism, act as role model for staff and others in the organization.

Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information.

Performs assigns work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor in timely manner, any unsafe situations, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.

Facilitates RCA and patient safety teams as needed.

Disseminates strategies and information to communicate organizational implementation plans

Performs other related duties as required.

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:

Daily contact with the Risk Management, Patient Relations, event/peer review staff and other department heads and clinical chairs

Frequent contact with Senior VP of Quality, Patient Safety and Population Health Management, and Vice President Patient Safety and Accreditation, Medication Safety Officer and Specialist and other key senior Leaders.

Regular contact with physicians, nurses, Patient Safety Officer. Project and program Managers and Accreditation Coordinators, Case Managers, Staff Development Specialist, Medical records personnel, information systems personnel, Data Acquisition & Measurement Coordinators and the Director for PI & Accreditation Services.

Occasional contact with ancillary department leaders such as dietary, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, laboratory and radiology personnel as necessary.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

Staff who perform event/peer review and expedited clinical abstracts.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to the Director of Patient Safety and Accreditation

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree in Nursing or 5-10 years equivalent experience.

Current Maryland or Compact State RN licensure required.

Minimum two years' work experience in patient safety or quality preferred.

Organizational skills and project management experience in patient safety or quality preferred.

Certification by National Association for Health Care Quality preferred.

Experience in supervisory or management position preferred.

Education, understanding of and/or experience in one or more of the following are desirable: information technology, performance improvement, outcome analysis, utilization management, team facilitation and education (patient/staff) preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of project management methodologies, tools and strategies

Knowledge of health care delivery organizational structure and clinical care.

Knowledge of just culture principles

Knowledge of applicable accreditation standards

Knowledge of Performance Improvement process and methodologies.

Knowledge of information systems.

Skilled in oral and written communications, including negotiating.

Skilled in initiation and maintenance of projects.

Skilled in analytical problem-solving.

Understands the linkages between training designs and organizational curriculum

Ability to plan, organize, direct and control multiple projects.

Ability to facilitate, motivate and manage various working team members and projects.

Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills

Ability to use Microsoft office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Process Flow charts and other PI

tools) for daily work and data input and retrieval.

Ability to adapt and learn new computer programs as necessary.

Ability to collaborate with clinicians and other staff.

Ability to exercise tact, judgment and diplomacy.

Ability to relate to people in a manner to gain confidence and establish support.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to adjust to changing work demands necessitated by fluctuations in workload or program

requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Flexibility and emotional stability to work under intense time and volume pressures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Walking to and from offices/campus sites and patient care areas; travel between System campuses and

possibly private offices accessing all areas of the system as required.

Intermittent and sustained periods of sitting and using computer terminal.

Frequent interruptions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Low to moderate risk of exposure to infectious conditions from patients and/or visitors to the patient

care areas.

Normal office environment.
