PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

To enhance and improve the quality of patient care at ChristianaCare by providing assessment, treatment, consultation and education services for individuals with neurological conditions.  Provides clinical support to the Outpatient Neurology practice.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts clinical interviews to provide diagnostic impression, treatment recommendations to neurology patient population.  Provides evidenced-based psychological interventions.
  • Works as a member of multidisciplinary teams (physicians, nurses, case management, psychiatrist) regarding treatment planning and connection to community based services as appropriate.
  • Provides coordination of care services with patients, families, providers, payment sources and other involved parties.
  • Actively participates in the design and implementation of research and evaluation projects to assess the effectiveness of and the specific influence of the health psychology component as needed.
  • Maintains up-to-date information on effective strategies and interventions to address psychological issues and health behavior change for people with (or at risk for) chronic diseases.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.  Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Maintains licenses/certifications in areas of specialty and completes mandatory CCHS education.
  • Maintains confidentiality of department and patient information.
  • Able to effectively communicate and work constructively with the multidisciplinary treatment team and maintain timely and appropriate documentation of the patient's clinical status and progress and treatment.
  • Able to deal effectively with both medically and psychiatrically ill patients who may exhibit physical and/or behavioral dysfunction.
  • Performs assigned tasks that need to be completed even when outside the scope of routine responsibilities; adaptable to changing departmental conditions.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.  Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Performs other related duties as required

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:

  • Frequent contact with multidisciplinary team members of Outpatient Neurology Practice and its administrative/support staff.  
  • Regular contact with members of the Behavioral Health Services.
  • Frequent contact with patients at.  Outpatient Neurology practice
  • Regular contact with community clinicians on coordination of care or solicitation of input for assessments.
  • Occasional contact with Training Director, Psychology Internship Program re program development.
  • Occasional contact with the general public and community groups through Christiana Care-sponsored events and/or as a guest speaker for community or corporate lectures on topics related to health psychology/wellness/mind-body medicine. 

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

May supervise psychology interns, psychology students for yearly clinical rotation.

  • Director of Psychology Services, Training Director, Chair, Department of Psychiatry; Corporate Director of Behavioral Health
  • Program Director and Medical Director, Outpatient Neurology

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD or PsyD in Clinical Psychology required.
  • Three to five years of experience in clinical/health psychology, working with individuals and groups with both acute and chronic health conditions.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary treatment teams in a medical setting. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge and skill in assessment, consultation, and treatment of psychiatric diagnoses, as well as the psychosocial problems associated with acute and chronic health conditions.
  • Ability to design and implement various types of behavior management protocols.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate support group services for patients.
  • Ability to design and implement research and evaluation projects.
  • Ability to translate psychological concepts and research findings for community audiences via articles/blog posts and community or corporate lectures and workshops. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft software packages and ability to master use of an electronic medical record. 
  • Ability to maintain composure under stressful situations.
  • Ability to discuss and develop patient therapy goals with physicians, nurses, clinicians and patients.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Knowledge of patients' rights, ethical and legal issues.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Delaware license or eligible for Delaware license.
  • Maintains ongoing/continuing education as required &/or as necessary to remain current with treatment methodology.
