ChristianaCare is recruiting for a Reference Laboratory Technician to work day shift. Hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Weekends and holidays as require

As the Reference Laboratory Technician, you will properly process all specimens that are sent to a reference laboratory, ensure all reference lab testing is completed in a timely fashion, and input the results in the laboratory computer system. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Process all incoming laboratory specimens which are not tested in-house, verify proper collection requirements and preservation of specimen integrity
  • Determine appropriate reference laboratory
  • Screen all results for appropriateness.  Ensure that all results are reviewed by physician section head or his designee and then enter all send out results into LIS.
  • Act as reference for physicians/nurses/phlebotomists for collection requirements and other questions relating to send out laboratory testing
  • Maintain accurate records of all specimens sent out to include: date and time sent, doctor and patient's names, type of specimen, reference laboratory's name, and laboratory reference number
  • Ensure that technical staff are updated to changes in send out procedures in order to handle evening, night and weekend STAT send out requests
  • Serve as laboratory liaison meeting with research coordinators to define lab role in research studies/protocols.  Verify any issues with with appropriate contacts.  Write associated procedures and notifies affected lab personnel.  Keeps separate log of all studies and track patients, ensuring all samples are handled as prescribed.  Serve as “point person” for any lab questions from the research group or lab staff, throughout the study.
  • Print out reports from appropriate reference labs and maintain files of reference reports.
  • Manually bills patients for send out tests not in the LIS and for all Federal Express charges.  Ensure charges are billed in a timely fashion so as to avoid late charges
  • Prepare, package, and mails specimens
  • Verify invoices from reference laboratories, identifying billing errors such as duplicate bills and erroneous charges
  • Maintain area, equipment, supplies and printers for all reference laboratories

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Two years of applicable clinical experience or equivalent college courses in the health care field required
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted
  • Knowledge of clerical methods, techniques, and office equipment.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions and infection control techniques
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Ability to utilize information to accurately identify patient and match specimen with request.
  • Ability to screen appropriateness of reference laboratory results and refer to physician director if questionable
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments
