The ChristianaCare Postpartum Unit (6M/7M) is a 72-bed inpatient unit that cares for postpartum patients and their stable newborns in the Women's and Children's Building on the Newark campus.  

 

The average length of stay is 1-4 days post birth and the general acuity level ranges from good to fair. The unit supports rooming in and family centered care. A couplet care model is utilized so that an RN will be assigned both the delivered parent as well as the newborn as a portion of their overall assignment.  A nursery is maintained primarily for emergency management or for short term convalescent care. Postpartum staff also support the care of newborns in our substance withdrawal program.

 

24/7 nursing care provided for delivered patients and their newborns can include:

-       Comprehensive physical, psychosocial & learning assessments

-       Individualized care planning & care plan execution

-       Facilitation of interdisciplinary team coordination

-       Skillful utilization of patient electronic health record

-       Advocacy & effective management in the event of patient condition change

-       Appropriate delegation of tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel

As a tertiary teaching organization supporting over 6,000 births annually, we strive to serve our community as partners in their care with excellence and love. All those joining the team in Women's & Children's can look forward to training and supporting care in other service line departments based on clinical competency and patient need. The Women's & Children's Service Line is comprised of an OB Emergency Department, Labor & Delivery, OB Peri-op, OB High Risk, Antepartum, NICU and Pediatric Emergency and Inpatient Unit.

The following certifications are required: BLS and NRP
