PRIMARY FUNCTION

This role is reserved for a respiratory therapist who is licensed, professional, competent, and assumes responsibility and accountability for providing respiratory therapy using defined process in collaboration with other health care team members.

 PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs and documents a basic clinical assessment of patients on admission and throughout hospital stay according to established standards
  • Assesses patient / family learning needs and carries out teaching measures as indicated
  • Initiates and follows a basic plan of care based on assessment and diagnosis
  • Communicates with and works on behalf of patients / families in a dignified, respectful manner to ensure effective implementation of the plan  of care
  • Administers all respiratory modalities and medications in a safe and effective manner
  • Provides therapy to patients and documents care delivery in the medical record
  • Interacts with patients, families, co-workers, management, physicians, and ancillary department staff in a compassionate and humanistic manner, demonstrating empathy, sensitivity, patience, and mutual respect
  • Demonstrates basic delegation skills to other personnel in a manner that optimizes patient care
  • Asks questions and is receptive to learning, personal development and sharing knowledge
  • Assumes an active role to keep informed about changes in policies, procedures and equipment, follows planned educational programs, and is willing to be taught, coached, and  / or mentored by others
  • Aware of patient rights and protects the patient / family rights and confidentiality
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established CCHS and departmental safety practices: reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors
  • Performs other related duties as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge on principles and practices of respiratory care
  • Knowledge of body systems and specific knowledge of pulmonary system
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Ability to operate, maintain and conduct routine trouble shooting techniques on various types of respiratory therapy equipment with emphasis on mechanical ventilators
  • Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions including medical emergencies
  • Ability to perform delicate invasive procedures, such as arterial blood gas analysis
  • Ability to discuss/develop patient therapy goals with physicians, nurses, other health care professionals
  • Knowledge of departmental and unit specific standards, guidelines, protocols, procedures and policies
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret lab values
  • Ability to safely administer medications
  • Ability to initiate and direct life support measures
  • Knowledge of chain of command
  • Ability to establish priorities according to patient needs
  • Ability to act independently within established procedures and protocols
  • Ability to exercise judgement, tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to use computer for patient information input and retrieval, as a reference source and mode to secure education
  • Ability to perform technical skills as outlined in procedures, guidelines and policies, demonstrating use of appropriate safety measures for patients, employees, and self
  • Ability to use equipment according to procedures, or protocol
  • Ability to access own knowledge and developmental needs
  • Ability to follow standard precautions
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:

Contact with physicians, nurses, therapists, department supervisors, public to discuss, as necessary, patient care, respiratory therapy procedures, current trends, home care, etc.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

Provides occasional supervision to orienteers, students, and equipment technicians

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Clinical Manager, Supervisor or a designated ChaANDrge Therapist.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate of CoArc approved School of Respiratory Therapy.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Maintains active certified Respiratory therapist (CRT) Credential
  • Maintain current BLS certification & NRP Certification
  • Licensure in the State of Maryland

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to push or pull heavy equipment, including tanks and ventilators. Must be able to move patients in a safe manner according to clinical needs. Must be able to manipulate small knobs and parts
