We are currently hiring for a Sr. CNA GI Technician to work 40 hours per Week, Monday - Friday for the Endoscopy Suite/Surgical Services Unit at Cecil Campus - Union Hospital.

Typical shifts are from 7:30am - 4pm. Weekends required as per department guidelines and on call shifts approximately once a quarter.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The GI technician is responsible for the preparation of the procedures in the Endoscopy Suite, assisting the Gastroenterologist in procedures. The GI technician performs high level disinfection endoscopic cleaning, facilitates flow of procedure room, follows standards of infection control and AAAMI and SGNA standards, functions under the direct supervision of the registered nurse.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists in data collection to identify the patient's needs, problems, concerns or human responses, e.g., vital signs.

Assists, under the direction of the GI Registered Nurse, in the implementation of the established plan of care.

Assists the physician and GI Registered Nurse before, during, and after diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Provides and maintaining a safe environment for the patient and staff (ANA, 2005) by complying with regulatory agency requirements and standards set forth by professional organizations and employers.

Acts sensitively with consideration to the diversity of the patient or group.

Collaborates within the gastroenterology team and other healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care.

Responsible for cleaning and high-level disinfection of flexible fiberoptic endoscopes and accessories.

Facilitates the daily operations of endoscopic procedures with ability to manage time and priorities.

Assists in scope preparation for patient care.

Complies with infection control principles, standards of Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, Inc (SGNA) in standards of endoscopic cleaning, and standards of Sterile Processing as set forth by the American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). These principles are to maintain a safe and infection free environment.

Assists with the compliance monitoring of the reprocessing protocols.

Works in partnership with other staff members and physicians and proactively identifies and provides for customer's needs by following and abiding by Union Hospitals' mission, vision and goals and Service Excellence of Union Hospital.

Completes initial and annual competencies in order to remain in the position.

Performs other related duties as assigned by Manager.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Demonstrates ability to clean, disinfect and care for endoscopes.

Performs compliance monitoring for sterilization.

Maintain universal precautions with appropriated personal protective equipment.

Responsibility for personal continuing education.

Knowledge of practice issues related to the field of gastroenterology.

Compliance with ethical, professional and legal standards inherent in-patient care and professional conduct, e.g., patient's bill of rights.

Participates in quality management activities as directed. Preference for established routine in keeping records, preparing schedules and verifying supplies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma.

American Heart Association BLS certification required.

GI endoscopy experience preferred Minimum of 1-year related industry experience. 

Licensed CNA in the state of Maryland. CNA's will be required to perform provision of nursing assistant care within scope of practice including IV insertions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical (prolonged standing, walking, moving, and lifting of equipment) stamina; may be expected to work overtime as needed.

Has the ability to lift 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Risk Exposure Category A - Potential for exposure to blood borne/pathogens, HIV, Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C in the performance of this job.

Potential for exposure to chemotherapeutic, cytotoxic medications and cleaning solutions), sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items.
