PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Reporting to the Chief Communications and Experience Officer, the primary responsibility in this position is to direct the Development team tasked with securing philanthropic support for the mission of Christiana Care Health System through identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors. Serves as lead strategist for developing and growing sustainable revenue streams and fostering a culture of philanthropy and stewardship for the organization.  Acts as liaison between the department of Development and the Christiana Care board members & Council of Advisors as well as other departments and external constituencies. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creates and implements annual development plan and strategy for Christiana Care Health System, including Major Gifts, Annual Fund, and other key areas of strategy that encompasses prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major donors to Christiana Care Health System (CCHS), that incorporates all Hospital  gift activity, that focuses on patients and friends; and ensures coordination with the broader Hospital efforts.
  • Leads fundraising strategy for Christiana Care Health System and subsidiaries to raise an annual seven-figure-plus goal.
  • Trains and leads development staff to meet their individual fundraising targets and the overall departmental goal.
  • Develops and manages Board and Council of Advisor fundraising; provides guidance and direction to the Manager of Partner Engagement and Experience for the Council of Advisors.
  • Cultivates and nurtures relationships with current and potential corporate & foundation sponsors, and individual donors.
  • Organizes fund-raising efforts for specific Christiana Care programs, including, but is not limited to, special events, identifying and researching funding sources and developing presentations on the importance of philanthropy for Christiana Care.
  • Assists in providing regular progress reports to management, Board of Directors and Board sub-committees as appropriate on the status of fund raising and potential pool of donors.
  • Serves as a Director-level leader for the Department of External Affairs.
  • Works in a multi-disciplinary, "team-oriented" environment.
  • Fosters key relationships and developing and implementing plans for the success of the Development team, including stewardship activities for existing and new donors. 
  • Becomes conversant with the needs, programs, and procedures of Christiana Care health System. 
  • Maintains communication with Hospital physicians and faculty and increase and manage the level of their involvement to enhance fundraising activities.
  • Writes or assists in drafting proposals, newsletters, and other collateral as necessary; assist with arrangements on important gifts, programs, accomplishments, or events.
  • Sets multiple priorities, organizing resources, and facilitating projects among groups and departments within the Christiana Care family and with external audiences such as the Council of Advisors, special committees, and volunteers, as related to Development activities.
  • Assists in presenting plans and programs in both written and oral form to various audiences communicating program progress and detailing upcoming fundraising initiatives.
  • Develops, manages, and meets all assigned project timetables and deadlines.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.  Reports to Chief Communications and Experience Officer, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Frequent contact with Chair of the Board of Directors, President & CEO, CFO, Council of Advisors members, Donors, Community Leaders, System Leadership and Medical Leadership.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree. CFRE preferred
  • Ten years with successful leadership fundraising experience, preferably in academic teaching hospitals.
  • Significant experience with face-to-face solicitations of major gifts ($100,000 +); proven success developing and implementing major gifts strategies for individual donors.
  • Experience diversifying donor base to include donors from historically underrepresented groups a plus.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
